Sea Cloud vs. Star Clippers: Tall Ship Sailing, Two Worlds Apart

Both carry canvas. One carries champagne. Understanding the spectrum of luxury under sail.

Sailing under canvas on the open ocean is one of travel's most romantic experiences — the silence when engines stop, the crack of sails catching wind, the impossible beauty of a full-rigged ship at sunset. Sea Cloud Cruises and Star Clippers both deliver this experience, but at dramatically different price points and service levels. Understanding what each offers — and what each doesn't — is essential to setting the right expectations.

Sea Cloud: the private yacht experience

Classic sailing yacht with billowing sails

Sea Cloud's original vessel, the SEA CLOUD, was built in 1931 as the private yacht of Marjorie Merriweather Post. It still operates, carrying 64 guests in cabins furnished with original antiques, mahogany paneling, and marble bathrooms. The newer SEA CLOUD II (94 guests) and SEA CLOUD SPIRIT (136 guests) carry the same DNA in modern form: all-inclusive fares covering four-course dinners, open bar, water sports from the marina platform, Zodiac tours, and select shore excursions. The crew-to-guest ratio is extraordinary. The atmosphere is refined without being formal — you'll dine with the captain, climb the mast if you want to, and dive into the ocean from the ship's own platform.

Star Clippers: the adventure sailing experience

Star Clippers operates three vessels: the Royal Clipper (227 guests), Star Clipper (170 guests), and Star Flyer (170 guests). These are genuine tall ships — the Royal Clipper holds the record as the largest full-rigged sailing ship in operation. The experience is more casual and adventure-oriented than Sea Cloud: the atmosphere is barefoot, the dress code is "whatever you wore ashore," and the onboard culture values the sailing itself above all else. Cuisine is good but not the focus. Shore excursions are optional and extra. The value proposition is exceptional: you get the romance of a tall ship at a fraction of the price of Sea Cloud or a conventional luxury cruise.

The price-experience spectrum

Sea Cloud fares are in ultra-luxury territory — comparable to Silversea or Regent on a per-night basis. But they're genuinely all-inclusive: every meal, every drink, every water sport, tips, port fees, and select excursions are included. Star Clippers fares are comparable to premium ocean lines — significantly less than ultra-luxury. Beverages, shore excursions, and gratuities are extra. When we run the full cost comparison including extras, Sea Cloud is roughly twice the per-night cost of Star Clippers. The question is whether the all-inclusive luxury, smaller guest count, and yacht-grade service justify the premium. For some travelers, absolutely. For others, Star Clippers delivers the essential magic — wind in the sails, unique ports, the romance of tall ships — at a more accessible price point.

Itinerary intelligence

Star Clippers excels in the Caribbean and Mediterranean with 7-night itineraries hitting lesser-known ports that larger ships can't access. Their Central America sailings through the Panama Canal and San Blas Islands are standouts. Sea Cloud's itinerary design is more varied: transatlantic crossings (no ports, just ocean — profoundly peaceful), Caribbean winter seasons, Mediterranean summer voyages, and unique positioning cruises. Their 21-day Central America combinations — linking two 10-11 night sailings — are among the most immersive small-ship offerings available.

The bottom line

Choose Sea Cloud if: you want a yacht-grade all-inclusive experience, you value intimate guest counts (64-136 people), you're drawn to transatlantic crossings or combination voyages, and you consider the ship itself as central to the experience as the destinations. Choose Star Clippers if: the romance of tall-ship sailing is what you're after, you prefer a casual barefoot atmosphere, you want excellent value relative to the experience, and you're comfortable with a la carte pricing for drinks and excursions. Both lines deliver something no motorized vessel can: the sound of wind in the rigging and the knowledge that you're traveling the way sailors have for centuries.

Discuss sailing options

Sea Cloud's original vessel, the SEA CLOUD, undergoes periodic maintenance periods. Confirm availability for your target dates with your advisor, as this historic ship's schedule can shift. Star Clippers' extended voyages (10+ nights) tend to sell out earlier than their standard 7-night sailings.
